rich and diverse community of approximately 65,000 located
in the forests and farmlands of southern Indiana. The
city is home to Indiana University and its long heritage
of excellence in academics, music and the arts, and athletics.

| Bloomington High School North
is a comprehensive public high school for grades 9-12
located on the northwest side of Bloomington. The school
serves a diverse community and its 1300 students represent
a variety of cultures and nationalities. Through educational
programs, extracurricular opportunities, community service,
student internships and student-initiated activities,
students learn to appreciate and respect the culture and
diversity of the Bloomington North community. |

| To meet the requirements for
graduation from high school, a student must accumulate
a minimum of 42 credits. Students must attend a minimum
of seven semesters in grades 9 - 12. One credit represents
the work satisfactorily completed
in one course for one semester, except in Beginning Physical
Education, which receives one-half credit. |

Curriculum

Bloomington High School North
schedules students in an alternating 8 block format. The
curriculum includes over 140 different course offerings
and allows students to design academic programs to meet
their individual needs. Graduation requirements are based
on work completed in grades nine through twelve. Accelerated
programs enable students to complete high school requirements
in seven semesters.
Special features of the curriculum include AP and Accelerated
Learning courses, vocational/technical training, work-study
programs, interdisciplinary studies, and independent study. |

ADVANCED PLACEMENT
CLASSES: English, math, and science. |

ACCELERATED LEARNING
PROGRAM: Classes composed of students who are highly motivated
and demonstrate a willingness and ability to be challenged
by an in-depth approach to English, Math, Social Studies,
Science, Foreign Language are offered for all grade levels. |

SPECIAL NEEDS
PROGRAM: BHSN provides special services for students with
mild mental handicaps, learning disabilities, emotional
handicaps, physical handicaps, and substantial disabilities.
Programs are individually designed to meet each student's
special needs. |

SUPPORT SUCCESS:
Freshmen and sophomore students experiencing academic
problems may be enrolled in the program designed to offer
individualized academic assistance, study skills, and
counseling. Enrollment is based upon counselor and/or
parent request. |
| 5. |
PEER TUTOR PROGRAM:
Students in this program are given the opportunity to
work with teachers in the program for the substantially
disabled. Students spend one period a day as a role model
for individuals with moderate and severe mental handicaps
by accompanying them to class, working on individual projects,
and assisting with vocational training. |

STUDENT ASSISTANCE
PROGRAM: BHSN's Student Assistance Program provides support
to students who may have problems which are interfering
with their success in school, and makes referrals to professional
resources when appropriate. Various support groups are
offered each semester, which focus on issues such as grief,
teenage pregnancy, stress, personal growth, divorced parents,
tobacco cessation and drug/alcohol abuse. Participation
is always voluntary and confidential. |

VOCATIONAL TRAINING:
Students may enroll in career courses at the Hoosier Hills
Career Center (a separate facility within the MCCSC system)
while attending their regular high school. |

The Bloomington High School
North students enjoyed enormous success during the 1999-2000
school year. There were five National Merit Finalists,
six National Merit semi-finalists and six commended students.
Ten seniors earned a perfect 4.0 grade point average while
81 students earned Academic Honors Diplomas and 113 students
earned Core 40 diplomas. Members of the senior class were
awarded a Wells Scholarship, two Lilly Endowment Community
Scholarships, two Rotary Scholarships and a Coca-Cola
Scholarship in addition to thousands of dollars in other
scholarships and awards. Seventy percent of the graduates
plan to attend college. There are two semi-finalists and
six commended students in the 2001 National Merit Program.
The Science Olympiad Team placed third in the state tournament.
The Bloomington High School North Band program was named
one of the one hundred 2000 Grammy Signature Schools in
the country. The Marching Band placed seventh in state
competition. The Bloomington High School North Orchestra
won first place at the Toronto Music Festival. Students
placed in Academic Decathlon, Spell Bowl and Hoosier Academic
Super Bowl competitions. North students won the State
and National Science Fairs in addition to earning awards
at the International Science Fair. Students made significant
contributions to many community organizations through
fundraisers, working voluntarily and attending meetings.
Programs and groups such as Habitat for Humanity, Bloomington
United, Kids Caring and Sharing for Riley Hospital, Hoosier
Hills Food Bank and area nursing homes benefited from
the commitment and dedication of Bloomington North students.
The Bloomington High School North athletes continued to
represent Bloomington North and the community very well.
Students earned two IHSAA Mental Attitude Awards. Six
students earned All-State Awards, five athletes earned
Academic All-State Honors and two individuals earned Honorable
Mention. Forty athletes earned Academic All-conference
awards and fifty-seven athletes were designated as Booster
Club Academic Athletes.
In addition to conference, sectional and regional honors,
athletes in Boy's Cross County, Boy's Track, Girl's Golf,
Boy's Swimming, Girl's swimming, Girl's Track and Wrestling
competed at the State level. The Boy's Basketball team
was state runner-up and a member of the team was named
Mr. Basketball. |
