PHYSICAL EDUCATION I (Semester 1) ½ CREDIT, Grade Level: 9
PREREQUISITE: none
Physical Education I emphasizes health-related fitness and development of the skills and habits necessary for a lifetime of activity. This program includes skill development and the application of the rules and strategies of complex difficulty and at least three of the following different movement forms: (1) health-related fitness activities (cardio-respiratory endurance, muscular strength and endurance, flexibility and body composition), (2) aerobic exercise, (3) teams sports, (4) individual and dual sports, (5) gymnastics, (6) outdoor pursuits, (7) self-defense, (8) aquatics, (9) dance and (10) recreational games. Ongoing assessment includes both written and performance-based skill evaluations. Classes are coeducational unless the activity involves bodily contact or groupings are based on an objective standard of individual performance developed and applied without regard to gender.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION II (Semester 2) ½ CREDIT, Grade Level: 9
PREREQUISITE: Physical Education I
Physical Education II emphasizes a personal commitment to lifetime activity and fitness for enjoyment, challenge, self-expression and social interaction. This course provides students with opportunities to achieve and maintain a health-enhancing level of physical fitness and increase the knowledge of fitness concepts. It includes at least three different movement forms without repeating those offered in Physical Education I. Movement forms may include:(1) health-related fitness activities (cardio respiratory endurance, muscular strengths and endurance, flexibility, and body composition), (2) aerobic exercise, (3) team sports, (4) individuals and dual sports, (5) gymnastics, (6) outdoor pursuits, (7) self-defense, (8) aquatics, (9) dance and (10) recreational games. Ongoing assessments include both written and performance-based skill evaluations. This course will include a discussion of unrelated careers. Classes are coeducational unless the activity involves a bodily contact or groupings are based on objective standard of individual performance developed and applied without regard to gender.
HEALTH EDUCATION (One Semester) 1 credit, Grade Levels: 9-12
PREREQUISITE: none
Health Education provides the basis for continued methods of developing knowledge, concepts, skills, behaviors and attitudes related to student health and well-being. This course includes major content areas in a planned, sequential, comprehensive health education curriculum as expressed in the Indiana Health Education Standards Guide: (1) Growth and Development; (2) Mental and Emotional Health; (3) Community and Environmental Health; (4) Nutrition; (5) Family Life; (6) Consumer Health; (7) Personal Health; (8) Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drugs; (9) Intentional and Unintentional Injury; and (10) Health Promotion and Disease Prevention. Students are provided with opportunities to explore the effect of health behaviors on an individual’s quality of life. This course assists students in understanding that health is a lifetime commitment by analyzing individual risk factors and health decisions that promote health and prevent disease. Students are also encouraged to assume individual responsibility for becoming competent health consumers. A variety of instructional strategies, including technology, are used to further develop health literacy.

ADVANCED PHYSICAL CONDITIONING (Full Year) Grade Levels: 10-12
"LIMIT OF 40 STUDENTS PER SECTION"
PREREQUISITE: Students must pass both N701 and N705 with a B grade or better.
The program followed in this class is designed to develop total body strength. Students are shown how to develop their strengths, and how to measure their improvement. We evaluate progress at the end of each grading period. This course is open to females and males. It is a yearlong course and may not be taken for only one semester. Students may repeat this course once for credit.
ELECTIVE PHYSICAL EDUCATION: RACQUET SPORTS
"LIMIT OF 32 STUDENTS PER SECTION"
Grade Levels: 10-12
PREREQUISITE: A passing grade in Physical Education I and II with a B or better
Students may sign up for this first semester class, which features six weeks of badminton, tennis, and table tennis. This class will provide detailed instruction in the fundamentals and concepts in each activity. Students will be engaged in tournament and high-level play. This course may be repeated on once for credit.
ELECTIVE PHYSICAL EDUCATION: TEAM SPORTS
"LIMIT OF 36 STUDENTS PER SECTION"
Grade Levels: 10-12
PREREQUISITE: A passing grade in physical education I and II with a B or better
Students may sign up for team sports second semester. This class will provide detailed instruction in the fundamentals and concepts in tournament and high-level play. Students may repeat this course once for credit.
ELECTIVE PHYSICAL EDUCATION: AEROBICS
"LIMIT OF 36 STUDENTS PER SECTION"
Grade Levels: 10-12
PREREQUISITE: A passing grade in physical education I and II with a B or better. Offered 1st semester only
This class will focus on mat and/or water aerobics. Students will be engaged in various aerobic exercises featured in videotapes, from gues instructors, or from the physical education instructor. This class is for students that are serious about physical fitness and are willing to put forth the effort to achieve that fitness. Students may repeat this course once for credit.
CURRENT HEALTH ISSUES (1 Semester) Grade Levels: 9-12
This course examines the causes and dangers of drug abuse, classifications and effects of drugs, and prevention and treatment of drug abuse, as well as other issues relevant to today’s youth in relationship to their well-being.
